Ohio Asks for Relief Amidst Mauritanian Crisis

Mauritania

The Islamic Republic of Mauritania, a country in Africa has been at the center of a human rights issue. There have been accusations of slavery and other rights violations. Senator Sherrod Brown and Representative Mike Carey are pleading with President Biden and Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas to extend Temporary Protected Status or Deferred Enforced Departure to refugees fleeing the horrific conditions in Mauritania.

TPS and DED

Temporary Protected Status (TPS) and Deferred Enforced Departure (DED) are immigration programs that target humanitarian crises around the world. TPS in particular is a designation for countries undergoing natural or humanitarian issues. In some cases, TPS is designated for those seeking refuge from natural disaster while others may be seeking asylum from political persecution or war.
